ChatGPT & Google, Wikipedia & LLMs

Posted by Myth00zilleh - 1 day ago

I almost went to Google for this, the same way I avoid using even Newgrounds, because absolutely everything in the modern world is really just a poisonous dystopiaaa.uhh............

Having said that, I realized that the manual compositions of a website/service such as Wikipedia, can directly be thought of in a similar way as the services of Large Language Models (L.L.M.s) - speaking of Google. So, I almost entered into the Google search bar "has anyone compared ChatGPT to Wikipedia?" or something to that effect.

Which of course would have the chance that Google itself responds with their own system that appears saying "AI Overview". Side note: Google has been doing that for probably at least a year now, and to this day, I haven't asked if that AI Overview thing is supposed to be the same as their "Gemini" stuff, which I haven't cared to investigate on any level - whatever. Again, back to my point.

Wikipedia is a collection of information on the internet that everyone is completely free to access, in many languages, around the world. While it might seem like Wikipedia and the systems that can be asked questions such as Google or ChatGPT are similar, in the access to information they provide - there is a very important difference.

Wikipedia really is free - no advertisements. Wikipedia is supported purely by the goodwill of an anonymous donor class of society. You may have never donated to Wikipedia, I am not asking you to do that now, but I will sincerely admit that I have in fact donated to Wikipedia, once (not very much money, 5 or 10 dollars, still).

Google is monetized through advertisements. It is a business. You are the product. Similarly, ChatGPT is owned (ironically) by a company called OpenAI. It is intended to eventually be something that makes money, owned by figures in Silicon Valley. There are others like them. (maybe something with,uh.. w, y.. z? something like that... others)

And here I am posting on another web-site/service.

well, ta-ta for now
